　これらの引用文で記されているほどの arrogant なひとを私は いままで 見たことがない。そこまでの arrogant であれば、それはそれで見事な arrogance だと思う──特に、二番目の引用文で記されている ことば を言える人物であれば、私は ひょっとしたら尊敬するかもしれない。勿論、そういうふうに豪語するときに 少しでも恥じらいを感じるような性質じゃだめであって、恥じらいを感じるのであれば単に誇張で言っているにすぎない。

　一番目の引用文には不快感を覚えるけれど、二番目の引用文には私は寧ろ爽快感すら感じます。そして、そこまで貫通していない arrogance が臭味を放つのでしょうね。小粒な自惚れ屋 （smart-alec） なら わんさといる。
